Electric Fuel Pump Kit-12 volt. Electric fuel pump is mounted in-line with the original fuel pump. If you want to run it full-time, we suggest you install an oil sensing pressure switch that can turn off the pump in the case of an accident. Pump operates at 1.3amp and makes 2.5-4psi.
Why use an electric fuel pump? The need for an electric fuel pump is usually one or more of the following. Because the old carburetors leak down or evaporate off the gas in the fuel bowl while in storage, one can fill the carburetor before cranking the engine and running the battery down. This is especially important on a 6volt car.
In the case of vapor lock - when the gas boils or turns to vapor - and the mechanical pump can't get a bite on it, turning on the electric pump will force liquid through the mechanical pump and into the carburetor. Additionally the higher pressure at the inlet of the mechanical pump may keep the fuel from vaporizing in the first place.
Mechanical pump failure is common. Many people that drive their car long distances opt to carry a spare fuel pump. If you have an electric pump installed you have a ready backup fuel pump at the flick of a switch. The two pumps can run at the same time without an issue. However most customers only use the electric pump as needed. Like when cold starting or if symptoms of vapor lock are present. Otherwise yes, they leave it off.
Note: All fuel pumps are not created equal. We recommend these low pressure fuel pumps. Some customers that used other fuel pumps reported that the fuel pressure was too high and would push past the needle and seat flooding the carburetor.
